Éan

Update - December 20204

Éan announced their closure on Instagram, effective from 1 December 2024.

As of last Sunday night, Éan Restaurant has served its last table. After over four years of trading through one of the most gruelling times for the hospitality industry, both locally and globally, we have made the incredibly difficult decision to call it a day. We signed the lease just two weeks before the first lockdown and manoeuvred through very turbulent seas, experiencing both incredible highs and lows. Along the way, we were supported by an amazing crew of staff, suppliers, and customers. We could not have made it this far without your unwavering support, and for that, we are truly grateful. It is a heartbreaking decision to close our doors, but as we face a winter of continued increases in overheads, weather disruptions, and an apathy towards the hospitality sector from the government, we find ourselves with no choice but to cease operations. Only those currently running a business—let alone a hospitality business in a post-pandemic world—can truly understand the pressures coming from all sides. Independent businesses, in particular, need your support now more than ever. They are the beating heart of towns and cities across the country. Use them or lose them. We will forever be grateful for the kindness and support shown to us over the years, both at Loam and Éan. We will honestly miss serving the city. Signing off Sinead and Enda

Éan bakery, cafe / restaurant and wine bar opened at the end of October 2020.

This was right in the middle of Ireland's Level 5 Covid-19 lockdown, so to start with they focussed on the takeaway bakery /cafe side, with limited hours and a menu only pastries and hot sandwiches. But there's a connecting doorway with the adjoining Druid Theatre:  once theatre resumed, Éan became a great pre restaurant / winebar as well as a welcoming daytime cafe for local office workers and residents.

It's in Druid Lane, just up from Flood Street, in the space which was previously Cactus Jack's Mexican restaurant - the entrance is just down from the Hall of the Red Earl.

The proprietors are Enda McEvoy and Sinead Meacle.  They also own Loam, one of Galway's two Michelin-starred restaurants, and the menu follows Loam's seasonal and innovative approach with breakfast treats, pastries and bakes, lunchtime sandwiches including pickles, ferments and charcuterie, and evening / winebar small and/or sharing plates.

Pork belly hot sandwich tasted fabulous - and will be even better once it doesn't have to be a takeaway!
